Embracing Your Magick
The Power of Psalm
Hey y'all, I am Brittany Michelle, and welcome or welcome back to my blog Moonlit Muva13! Today, we’re diving deep into something that’s near and dear to my heart, and a foundational element in Hoodoo practice: the Book of Psalms.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking: "The Bible? In Hoodoo?" Absolutely! The Psalms, a collection of sacred songs and poems from the Old Testament, are not just for Sunday service. They are potent spiritual tools and powerful allies when used within the context of Hoodoo.
Honoring your Ancestors
Before we get started, I want to emphasize that the use of Psalms in Hoodoo is rooted in a history of resilience, adaptation, and spiritual empowerment. Enslaved Africans, stripped of their traditional religions, found solace and coded spiritual power within the scriptures they were exposed to. They reinterpreted these texts, imbuing them with their own ancestral wisdom and creating a new, dynamic spiritual practice. Remembering this is not just a matter of acknowledging history but also of respecting the ingenuity and strength of our ancestors.
Understanding that the use of the Psalms is not just a borrowing, but a reclamation is key. This is how we honor the path we walk, understanding the origins of our practice so that we can keep our culture going.
Why Psalms?
So, why the Psalms specifically?
• Power of Words: Psalms are filled with raw emotion, prayers for protection, cries for help, and expressions of gratitude. These aren't just pretty words; they are concentrated bursts of spiritual energy. Hoodoo practitioners recognize the power of spoken word and intention, and the Psalms provide a readily available source of that.
• Universal Themes: The themes in the Psalms – dealing with adversity, seeking justice, finding peace, expressing love – are timeless and universal. They resonate with the human experience, making them accessible to anyone seeking spiritual aid.
• Connection to the Divine: The Psalms are, at their core, prayers to God (or the Divine Source, however you choose to define it). This creates a direct line of communication, allowing you to tap into a higher power for guidance, support, and intervention.
• Versatility: The Psalms can be used for almost anything! From attracting love to protecting your home, from healing a broken heart to removing jinxes, there's a Psalm for practically every situation.
Psalm in your Hoodoo
Okay, so how do you actually use these powerful verses in your workings? Here are a few ways:
• Reading Aloud: This is the most basic and effective method. Choose a Psalm that corresponds to your needs, find a quiet space, and read it aloud with intention and feeling. Visualize your desired outcome as you speak the words. You can choose to use your own voice and read it as a prayer, or you can choose to sing it.
• Psalms and Candle Magic: Anoint a candle with oil (appropriate to your intention – e.g., protection oil, love oil, money-drawing oil). As you light the candle, recite the corresponding Psalm. Let the candle burn completely. This is a simple way to amplify the power of your prayer.
• Psalms in Mojo Bags: Write out the Psalm on a piece of parchment paper and include it in your mojo bag, along with other relevant ingredients. This adds a layer of spiritual power to your charm.
• Psalms and Baths: Add a few drops of Holy Water to your bath water, and recite the psalm during your bath. Make sure you take your bath from the top down, in order to cleanse your energy.
• Psalms for Anointing: You can anoint yourself with oils as you recite the proper Psalms for healing or blessing.
